What am I working on this week?

I am packing. We booked a Costco vacation package to Hawaii. It's noteworthy because we have not been on vacation in eons. Also, we never actually went on a honeymoon. The lack of a honeymoon may explain why we continue to be sickly sweet with each other to the annoyance of all our friends. We are like newlyweds years past any sell-by date on those antics.  So we are calling this our honeymoon. I don't plan on stopping our sweetness as a result.

Also this week I got a haircut for vacation. Also noteworthy because I have mostly cut my own hair since the start of covid. I reasoned that if I cut my hair, saving the cost of a barber, I could justify the cost of hosting my website and the yearly dues to keep it up and running as well as the clippers. But my hair-cutting skills still require the regular use of hats to cover errors, so super cute vacation pics require me getting my hair done by someone who can see the back of my head.

Insight

I have a new religious belief regarding hair clippers and all small electirc tools. Always get the corded option over the cordless option. Here are a few reasons. First, cordless tools are always in need of a charge exactly when you need to use them. It is a handyman truism. A second reason, the price of corded tools is way lower and since you use them seldomely there is no value in being cordless. Lastly, lifespan. The battery packs will die the cord lives forever.

I talked my husband into taking checked luggage. Normally we have views about checking luggage. He responded by picking out a small retro 50's faux leather suitcase.  It's part of a matching set of three we use to store blankets in the bedroom. Our views on the matter are not in sync. In contrast, he sees how perfectly it will hold all his things neat and tidy. On the other hand, I see a missed opportunity for a tactical ripstop fabric duffle bag with room for a second pair of my shoes, beach toys, and his mini suitcase to boot. I compare his tiny suitcase's design choice with an episode of Sideshow Bob on the Simpsons, Bob gets out of prison and buys a dud atomic bomb. He failed because instead of choosing a current working model bomb, he ended up picking out the retro 50's atomic bomb to destroy Springfield all lost because  he liked the way the tail fined model looked. We won't be bringing home any chotskis, sorry. No room in Sideshows suitcase.

The Dog

Huge thanks to our friends Nate and David for taking our dog for a week. It's a big deal because our dog won't let anyone touch her other than us. And often not even us. It has kept us locked into pet-friendly travel options for over ten years. Our friend Nate took her for a morning this week to see how she would act. Suprisingly she was fine with Nate. That is a huge releaf. I am sure we will be very happy to get home to pick her up after a week of separation.

Planning and Scheming

To take charge more often, which keeps the spice in our relationship, I started to book some activities for us while in Waikiki. High on our list of things to do are a zip line ride, snorkeling in a popular location, and a tribute to the great generation by visiting the Pearl Harbor memorial. My dream activity is the helicopter-based jump into the ocean with a scuba dive boat standing by with all my gear. But I think they would turn me away for liability reasons.

What am I reading this week?

Someday is Today | Matthew Dicks link

Matthew is a teacher, a writer, Wedding DJ, Part time minister, Father... He has an always say yes mentality.  This ability to take on more than one thing at a time has spread his "possibility tree" branches far and wide. He has an eagles eye view of the world. A believer of taking in the big picture. The book offers many chapters of his insights of how to get the most out of your time. Weight the value of an activity from the perspective of you 100 year old self.  Would the you at the end of your days be happy you took on this or that activity over something else?  I know people like Matthew and would love to use his guide book to spread my own possibility Tree.

Big Take Away

When it comes to getting things done and saving time have criminal intent. Don't let a short velvet rope come between you and a wonderful experience. Results trump rules.
